Christmas Vacations for Families: 9 Trips to Book Early

Key takeaways

5 min read

Nine family Christmas trips grouped by the holiday they deliver, with official 2026 dates, the Christmas-week catch and the one booking to lock in first.

  1. 1Orlando: the fully programmed holiday
  2. 2New York City: the show-and-lights city
  3. 3London: lights, culture and a car-free Christmas Day
  4. 4Québec City: the market town, if you arrive early
  5. 5Rovaniemi: the Santa trip that justifies the flight

The best family Christmas vacation is the one whose ordinary day still works around bedtimes, weather and closed restaurants. Pick the kind of holiday first (theme park, city, Santa or sunshine), then check what actually runs from December 20 to January 1. The season and the day itself keep different calendars.

These nine picks are editorial. Every date comes from an official park, venue or tourism-board page, read in September 2026.

The book-by table

No destination publishes a booking deadline or crowd forecast, so the last column names the piece that sinks the trip if it sells out. Lock that in before November.

Theme-park and big-city Christmases

Orlando: the fully programmed holiday

Orlando works when your kids already love theme parks. Walt Disney World's holiday page runs the season from November 13 to January 6, with EPCOT's International Festival of the Holidays through December 30, 2026 and Disney Jollywood Nights on select nights through January 5, 2027.

The catch: Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party ends December 22 (select nights from November 8), and Disney's holiday room offers end with December 24 stays. Put a slow day between park days. Hotels and tours are in our Orlando family guide, and if you're bringing a little one, start with the Disney World with a toddler guide.

New York City: the show-and-lights city

NYC Tourism's holiday guide leads with the Rockefeller Center tree and the Rockettes. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular calendar lists shows from November 4, 2026 to January 4, 2027, including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Book the show before the hotel, and carefully: all ticket sales are final, with no refunds or exchanges. Then plan by neighborhood, not by window display. Our New York City with kids guide covers where families stay.

London: lights, culture and a car-free Christmas Day

London earns its place for museums and lights, with one hard constraint. Visit London's Christmas travel guide says buses, trams, the Underground and the Overground don't operate on December 25, and most attractions close. Transport winds down from early evening on Christmas Eve, and Boxing Day runs a reduced timetable.

Christmas Day rule: book a meal you can walk to from your hotel. Visit London notes that most places serving Christmas Day meals require advance reservations, and the taxis that do run charge higher fares.

Base yourself with our London family guide; with older kids, see things to do in London with teenagers.

Snow, markets and Santa

Québec City: the market town, if you arrive early

Québec City's German Christmas Market runs November 19 to December 23, 2026 across six free sites in Old Québec, open Thursday to Sunday plus December 21 to 23. The same page lists the Grand Christmas Market ending December 24.

If the markets are the point, arrive by December 21 and stay within the city walls or on Parliament Hill, which the tourism office recommends for reaching the market on foot. Allow extra time for hills with a stroller.

Rovaniemi: the Santa trip that justifies the flight

Rovaniemi, in Finnish Lapland, is the most purpose-built pick. Visit Rovaniemi says you can meet Santa at Santa Claus Village every day of the year, with more Christmas programmes in season and a "Santa Claus is on His way" event on December 23.

Book this first: Visit Rovaniemi’s activities page warns that many activities sell out early from December to March. Reserve the reindeer or husky outing before the hotel package.

Check time outdoors, transfer length and age limits, and treat the northern lights as a bonus, not a promise.

Copenhagen: one fairytale park, done slowly

Copenhagen suits a compact city break with one centrepiece. Tivoli Gardens runs Christmas in Tivoli from November 13 to January 3, which Visit Copenhagen dates as 2026 to 2027, with lights, rides, a Santa Train and Father Christmas. Check Tivoli's hours for December 24 and 25 and ride height rules, and keep the next day light. Choose Copenhagen for the city, not for snow.

Warm-weather Christmases

San Diego: festive outings, flexible days

San Diego suits kids of mixed ages. The San Diego Tourism Authority's holiday hub gathers light displays, a Christmas tree trail and a family holiday itinerary. Watch the headline date, though: the city's Balboa Park December Nights runs December 4 and 5, 2026, and draws more than 350,000 people over two days. Christmas-week visitors will miss it, so alternate big outings with easy days. Where to stay is in our San Diego with kids guide.

Oʻahu: swap winter for the beach

Oʻahu is a beach trip first. The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority's Oʻahu guide points families to Waikīkī Beach, the Lēʻahi (Diamond Head) hike, snorkeling at Hanauma Bay and Pearl Harbor.

Winter surf: the tourism authority’s Oʻahu ocean-safety tips call North Shore winter waves dangerous. Heed the signs and swim only where there’s a lifeguard.

Our beach and ocean safety guide covers the rest; for the long flight, use these flying with a toddler tips.

Costa Rica: wildlife instead of tinsel

Visit Costa Rica puts the dry season from mid-December to late April, with a longer rainy period on the Caribbean coast, and says to look out for humpback whales arriving in late December. It warns that hotels, restaurants and national-park excursions get busy in winter. Pick one rainforest base and one beach base, and check real transfer times; our Costa Rica family guide has the regions. Rather unpack once? Compare the best family all-inclusive resorts.

Before you book: the bottleneck checklist

  • Name the deal-breaker: the show, the family room, the Santa activity or the nap-friendly flight.
  • Match it to your dates: "holiday season" isn't December 24 to 26.
  • Read the refund terms: some holiday tickets are final sale.
  • Plan Christmas Day on foot: meal, route and a weather backup.

"Before November" isn't a rule any destination enforces. It's when those scarce pieces are still choices, not waitlists.
