Cancún is really two coasts on one thin strip of sand. The bay side, from Punta Cancún down to about km 9, is sheltered and shallow enough for toddlers to wade; the long Caribbean side takes the swell and the red flags. Families tend to split the day between a calm-water morning, an air-conditioned middle and an evening among local families downtown.
