Christmas in New York City with kids works best when you book the few things that sell out, then plan each day around one neighborhood. The Rockettes start November 4, the Rockefeller Center tree is lit December 2, and the Bronx light shows run into January.
Every date below comes from the venue's or organizer's own page, read on October 3, 2026; unpublished 2026 dates are marked, not guessed. Age notes are our judgment.

Midtown: the tree, the show and the rinks
Rockefeller Center tree and The Rink
Rockefeller Center says the 2026 tree arrives on November 7 and is lit at the Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 2. Visiting hours aren't posted yet. When will it come down? Not announced; the 2025 tree came down on January 10.
The Rink opens October 10, with General Skate from $22 as of October 2026. Sessions run 60 minutes, and non-skating parents need a ticket too. Under-6s must skate with an adult, and children may not be carried on the ice. Sales are final; you can reschedule up to 24 hours ahead.
Radio City Christmas Spectacular
The Rockettes calendar runs November 4, 2026 to January 4, 2027, including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The show lasts 90 minutes with no intermission, and all sales are final. The Rockettes FAQ says children under 2 sit on a lap without a ticket. There's a free stroller check on every level, plus sensory bags with noise-canceling headphones to borrow.
Bryant Park Winter Village
Bryant Park's rink is free if you bring skates, but you still reserve an entry time. Rentals cost $18.72 to $64.48 as listed in October 2026, and skate aids are free before 10:30am, subject to availability. Under-14s must be with an adult. From mid-November there's free first-come stroller parking by the info kiosk on the fountain terrace.
Markets, windows and lights
The Grand Central Holiday Fair in Vanderbilt Hall is the indoor fallback when it pours. It's closed Thanksgiving Day and open until 8pm from December 17 to 23.
Union Square's outdoor market hasn't published 2026 dates. Neither has Saks for its Fifth Avenue light show. Macy's says its Holiday Square opens at Herald Square on October 30, but its holiday celebrations page has no 2026 Santaland details yet.
The Dyker Heights lights in Brooklyn are private homes, so there are no official dates or hours. Go after dark, dress for an evening outdoors, and without a car consider a bus tour from Manhattan.

Worth the trip to the Bronx
At the NYBG Holiday Train Show, model trains circle nearly 200 landmark replicas made from plant parts inside the Haupt Conservatory. It's included in the All-Garden Pass, and evening hours run to 8pm on select dates, including November 27 to 29 and December 26 to 30. The visitor guidelines keep strollers out of the conservatory, with parking outside.
Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights runs rain or shine, with tickets reserved in advance. New for 2026, the Children's Zoo farmyard opens for the event, and World of Reptiles and World of Darkness stay open as warm-up spots. Your ticket lets you arrive at 1pm and see the animals before dark.
Parade and New Year's Eve with kids
Macy's 100th Thanksgiving Day Parade is on Thursday, November 26. For New Year's Eve, the Times Square Alliance FAQ is blunt: no tickets, no portable restrooms, no licensed food vendors, and leave your spot and you can't return. With young kids, watch the free webcast from the hotel.
A crowd plan by day of the week
No venue publishes crowd counts, so this is reasoning from the calendars:
- Best window: Monday to Thursday between December 3 and December 23, after the tree is lit and before NYC public schools close for winter recess on December 24.
- Busiest stretches: Thanksgiving weekend (schools close November 26 and 27) and December 24 to January 1. Bryant Park runs peak hours from November 19 to January 3.
- Weekends: book timed tickets early; do outdoor stops in the morning.
- Every day: one Midtown cluster, one Bronx trip or one Brooklyn evening, not all three.

Getting around with a stroller
- Subway: the MTA's subway guide says to fold strollers and carry children on stairs and escalators, and to use elevators where possible. Check the accessible stations list before you pick a route.
- Bus: by the end of 2026 every local and Select Bus Service bus will have one open-stroller space near the rear door. Look for the stroller sticker by the front door. If the space is taken, fold.
- Fares: the fare is $3, and up to three children under 44 inches ride free with a paying adult.
Weather and what to pack
Our New York weather data puts December highs around 43°F and lows around 32°F, with about 11 rainy days. Pack a stroller rain cover, a footmuff or blanket, hats and gloves, and plan one indoor stop a day.
