Natural History Museum, South Kensington
2–4 hoursFree admission, and the payoff is immediate: a blue whale skeleton suspended over the main hall that stops children of every age dead in the doorway. The dinosaur gallery includes an animatronic T. rex that toddlers find either transfixing or terrifying — there is a bypass route if it's the second. Go at opening or after 3pm; the mid-morning queue is the worst part of the visit. The Science Museum is a five-minute walk away and also free, so a rainy day has a built-in plan B.
- Pace
- Easy to shorten if attention runs out.
- Nap plan
- Choose a morning slot or start immediately after the main nap.
- Getting there
- Confirm the meeting point, boarding cutoff, life-jacket sizing, and motion-sickness plan.
- Weather
- Strong heat or rain backup; timed entry can still matter.
