The one paid historic site that reliably holds children, largely because the Yeoman Warder tours are performed rather than narrated — an hour of executions, ravens and gallows humour, included with entry and led by someone who lived on site. The Crown Jewels queue moves on a travelator, so there's no standing still with a bored six-year-old. Arrive at opening; by noon the jewel house is a slow shuffle.

The most underrated family journey in London. The Uber Boat by Thames Clippers river bus is public transport rather than a tour, it's step-free, and it turns a transfer into the day's highlight — Tower Bridge, the Shard and Canary Wharf go past at deck level. At the Greenwich end: the Cutty Sark, the free National Maritime Museum, and the Royal Observatory where children can stand with one foot in each hemisphere on the Prime Meridian.

A free, fully enclosed playground built around a wooden pirate ship in a sand sea, with a single staffed entrance and a strict adults-must-be-accompanied-by-a-child policy. For under-8s it is the best two hours in central London and costs nothing. It fills by late morning in summer and operates a queue when at capacity, so arrive before 11am. Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park run on from it for a nap-in-the-stroller walk.
