Most lists of family vacation destinations rank places by how pretty they look. This one lines up 22 of the US destinations we cover in depth by what decides whether a trip works with kids: family-friendliness, ages, weather and flight time. Every number in the table comes from our own destination guides; the picks below it are our judgment.

The US family vacation matrix

Kid rating is the 1–10 family rating on each destination guide, and best ages come from its age notes. Best months are the ones our month-by-month weather notes rate highest. Flight times come from our flight data (compiled April 2026); "+" means no nonstop in that data, so the time includes a connection. Park times are to the gateway airport, then you drive: about 3.5 to 4 hours to the Grand Canyon's South Rim, 1.5 to Yellowstone. Sedona includes the drive from Phoenix; the Keys are timed to Miami. Check live schedules before you book.

Two places we cover missed the cut: New Orleans and Las Vegas both rate 5/10 in our guides, and neither guide recommends it for toddlers.

Our picks, by the trip you're planning

San Diego: the best all-round US family vacation

San Diego shares the top rating (10/10), suits ages 1 to 12 and rates best for weather from July to October. The zoo, LEGOLAND and Balboa Park give every age a day of its own, and it's under an hour from LAX. Our San Diego family guide maps the neighborhoods and hotels.

Orlando: the best first big trip

Orlando ties for the top rating and suits ages 2 to 14. Go November to February; summer highs hit 91 to 92°F and September brings hurricane risk. Universal's newest park, Epic Universe, adds five themed worlds, including Super Nintendo World. Pick your week with our Disney World month-by-month guide.

Destin, Florida: the easiest beach week with babies and toddlers

Our guide calls Destin exceptional for infants and toddlers. The catch: no nonstop from any airport in the table, so flyers connect to Pensacola, 45 minutes away. Aim for April–May or September–October; January is too cool to swim. On a tighter budget, Panama City Beach sits farther east on the same coast.

Washington, DC: the best city for school-age kids

DC rates 9/10 and suits ages 5 to 17. The Smithsonian's DC-area museums and National Zoo are free, which leaves the budget for the hotel. Go April–May or October; our notes call July oppressively humid.

New York City: the city teens remember

Our guide puts New York's sweet spot at 4 to 17, and teenagers get the most from it: shows, subways and neighborhoods to roam on their own. Go April–May or September–October; January highs average 38°F, hard going with a stroller.

Grand Canyon: the national park for tweens and teens

Its 6/10 rating is about age, not scenery: our guide suggests 8 and up for rim hikes and 12 and up for the inner canyon. The South Rim is open 24 hours a day, all year. The North Rim lost Grand Canyon Lodge to the July 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire, and the Park Service says it has no overnight lodging in 2026, so plan around the South Rim.

Florida Keys: the warm winter week

Our weather notes call January in the Keys near-perfect and December one of the top family beach months. Water activities suit kids 5 and up best. Skip June to October, when our notes flag hurricane season. Most families fly to Miami and drive: about 1.5 hours to Key Largo, 4 to Key West.

Maui and the Big Island: the bucket-list beach trip

Both rate 9/10, but the flight decides it: about 5 to 5.5 hours nonstop from LAX or SFO, 9.5 to 11 with a connection from Chicago or New York. Our notes favor April to September on Maui; in winter, NOAA says humpbacks are generally seen from November through April. On the Big Island, base on the drier Kona side. Torn? See Maui vs the Big Island with kids.

Great Smoky Mountains: the budget road trip

Unlike Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, the Smokies charge no entrance fee, only a parking tag for stops over 15 minutes: $5 a day or $15 a week, as of October 2026. Flying in means connecting to Knoxville, so it works best as a drive. Book early for October color. For a budget beach, Myrtle Beach rates 8/10 with nonstops from Chicago and New York.

Yellowstone: the summer wildlife trip for ages 6 and up

The family season is short, June to August, and much of the road network closes from November. The park says no vehicle reservation is needed to enter; a private-vehicle pass is $35 for seven days, as of October 2026. Pair it with Jackson Hole, whose airport is about 60 miles from the South Entrance.

Puerto Rico: the passport-free bonus

USA.gov confirms US citizens don't need a passport for Puerto Rico, the easy Caribbean pick when a child's passport is pending. Go December to April; our notes rate August to October as hurricane months to avoid. Nonstops run about 3.5 hours from JFK.

Choose in three questions

  • How young is your youngest? Under 3: San Diego, Destin, Maui or Puerto Rico. Under 6: save Yellowstone and Grand Canyon hikes for later.
  • When can you go? Winter: Orlando, the Keys, Puerto Rico. Summer: Seattle, Chicago, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole.
  • How far will they fly? Read your airport's column and cross out anything over your limit.
