Verified April 2026Is Florida Keys, Florida Good for Families?
The Florida Keys work well for families with water-confident kids — the snorkeling and diving access is genuinely world-class and available right off the beach or dock in places like Islamorada and Key Largo. Key West is fun for families who embrace its eccentric character, but Duval Street nightlife makes it a mixed environment with young children. The Keys reward families who prioritize water over beaches — the sand beaches here are small and sometimes rocky; the real draw is what's beneath the surface.
US-1, the Overseas Highway, runs 113 miles from Key Largo at the top of the Keys to Key West at the very bottom, crossing 42 bridges including the Seven Mile Bridge — one of the great American drives. The Keys sit in the Florida Straits between the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico, which means the water on either side is warm, clear, and accessible year-round. Key Largo anchors the Upper Keys and is the self-proclaimed 'Diving Capital of the World' — John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first undersea park in the US, gives families access to the only living coral reef in the continental United States. Glass-bottom boat tours, snorkeling trips, and beginner dive courses are available for every age and ability level. No previous experience required for most family-oriented reef trips. Islamorada in the Middle Keys is where sport fishing culture runs deepest, but it's also home to the Theater of the Sea and some of the Keys' most beautiful and accessible shallow reef snorkeling. Marathon, roughly mid-chain, has a small airport, a Sea Turtle Hospital that does public tours, and the famous Pigeon Key with its old railroad history. Key West is the destination most people picture — sunset at Mallory Square with street performers, Duval Street's chaos, Ernest Hemingway's cats, the Southernmost Point marker, and Cuban food that genuinely lives up to its reputation. It's fun for families who don't need a pristine beach environment and can let kids stay up late to catch the sunset spectacle. The vibe is eccentric and festive rather than child-centric.

Top Activities for Families
Snorkeling at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park
America's first undersea park, just north of Key Largo, offers the most accessible living coral reef snorkeling in the continental US. State-operated snorkel boats run twice daily to the reef — 2.5-hour trips that put you directly over formations teeming with parrotfish, angelfish, and occasional sea turtles. Kids who can swim with a mask and snorkel (no previous experience required) are the target audience. Gear rental included.
Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters (Marathon)
A hands-on aquarium where visitors can touch rays, feed fish, and interact with aquatic life in shallow open tanks. The Encounter Dives let certified divers swim with sharks in an open system — not recommended for under-10, but the shallow encounters and touch tanks are excellent for young kids who want something more interactive than a standard aquarium.
Turtle Hospital Tour (Marathon)
A working sea turtle hospital that rehabilitates injured turtles and gives 90-minute guided tours. Visitors see rehabilitation tanks, learn about turtle biology, and watch feedings. Many of the resident turtles are permanent residents — unable to return to the wild — giving the tour a meaningful emotional edge that kids respond to. One of the more substantive educational activities in the Keys.
Sunset at Mallory Square, Key West
Every evening an hour before sunset, Mallory Square Dock in Key West fills with street performers, artisans, and crowds waiting for the famous sunset. Acrobats, musicians, trained cats walking tightropes, and the collective cheer when the sun dips below the Gulf horizon make it a memorable event. Touristy? Absolutely. But kids love it and it's free.
Glass-Bottom Boat Tour
For families with kids who aren't strong swimmers or who are too young to snorkel, glass-bottom boat tours over the reef offer a window into the underwater world from the comfort of a boat. John Pennekamp State Park and several Key West operators run these. Kids press their faces against the viewing panels as rays and reef fish drift underneath. A good first introduction to reef ecology.
