Is Aruba Good for Families?

Aruba is one of the most reliable choices for families anywhere in the Caribbean. The island sits below the hurricane belt (a genuine rarity), has calm trade winds that keep temperatures from feeling brutal, and its main beaches have protected, calm water. The island is also safe, clean, and English-speaking — logistics are easy and stress-free for families with young children.

Aruba's greatest selling point is consistency. The island sits 15 miles north of Venezuela, well outside the Atlantic hurricane belt — it genuinely has fewer weather disruptions than almost any Caribbean destination. Combined with constant northeast trade winds that moderate temperatures to a comfortable 80-85°F year-round, Aruba has a remarkably stable weather profile for trip planning. Eagle Beach, a few miles from the main hotel zone at Palm Beach, is a genuine gem — one of the widest beaches in the Caribbean, with soft white sand and calm turquoise water. It's far less crowded than the hotel strip at Palm Beach, and the water is protected by the island's orientation. For families with infants and toddlers, Eagle Beach's calm, shallow fringe is as safe as any beach in the region. Aruba is an Autonomous Territory of the Netherlands, which means it's remarkably well-governed, clean, and safe by Caribbean standards. English is widely spoken (alongside Dutch, Papiamento, and Spanish). Crime rates are very low by regional standards. The capital, Oranjestad, has a genuinely charming Dutch-Caribbean colonial architecture that's pleasant to explore with older kids. The main limitations: Aruba is arid and relatively flat, which means the dramatic tropical landscape of St. Lucia or Belize doesn't exist here. It's a beach and water activities destination — not a hiking or cultural immersion destination. The main hotel zone at Palm Beach can feel somewhat generic and strip-mall-like. Families seeking authenticity should look beyond the resort zone.

Top Activities for Families

Eagle Beach Free Days

Eagle Beach is less developed and more spacious than the resort zone beaches at Palm Beach — wide enough that it never feels crowded, and the water is calm and sheltered. Facilities are minimal (no beach clubs or vendors) which is a feature, not a bug. Bring your own chairs and snacks and stake out a spot. A genuinely relaxing beach day that families consistently rate among their best in the Caribbean.

Snorkeling at Antilla Shipwreck

The Antilla is one of the largest shipwrecks in the Caribbean and sits in 60 feet of water off Aruba's northwest coast — but the shallowest sections are accessible to snorkelers in 15-20 feet of water. Bright parrotfish, angelfish, and lionfish have colonized the wreck. A guided boat snorkel trip is the only access option. Kids who are comfortable in the water find it extraordinary.

Ages: 7+$50-80/person for a guided 2-snorkel-site boat trip

De Palm Island All-Day Water Park

De Palm Island is a small private island accessible by ferry from the main island, with a full water park including slides, a lazy river, a snorkel area, and all-inclusive food and drinks. It's essentially a floating resort for a day and enormously popular with kids. The snorkel lagoon is calm and reef fish are visible without going far from shore.

Ages: All ages$90-120/person all-inclusive day pass including ferry

Arikok National Park ATV or Jeep Tour

Arikok National Park covers nearly 20% of the island and offers a completely different side of Aruba — volcanic rock formations, wild donkeys, cacti, and coastal blowholes. ATV tours and jeep safaris are the main way in, and most operators are comfortable with children on the ATVs (minimum age/weight restrictions apply). The contrast with the beach strip is total and worth half a day.

Ages: 6+ (ATV passenger); 16+ to drive$80-120/person for a guided tour

Atlantis Submarine Tour

A real submarine that descends to 130 feet and cruises past reef and artificial reef structures while a narrator explains the marine life. No swimming required — everyone sits in the air-conditioned sub and watches through portholes. Absolutely magical for kids who don't swim confidently, and still impressive for those who do. Minimum age is typically 4 years old.

Ages: 4+$55-90/person
