Book the trip pieces

This is the practical next step: check family-room availability, reserve age-friendly activities, and pack the gear this itinerary assumes you have.

Hotel links open Booking.com, where prices and availability are shown. Links may earn Tots & Trips a commission at no extra cost to you. Recommendations stay independent.

Getting there & around

From OGG to your Maui stay

Pre-book the airport transfer

A driver meets you at Kahului Airport. Booking.com shows the price before you book and has a child-car-seat request on the booking form.

Rent a car at OGG

Compare rental companies at Kahului Airport side by side. Many of them offer infant and child car seats as an add-on: use the Car seat filter and add one when you book.

Opens Booking.com with sample dates about a month out (or the stay dates saved on your trip board). Change them to your trip there. Tots & Trips may earn a commission.

Day by day

Day-by-Day Plan

5 days, each paced morning to evening. Places the plan names are pinned on the Maui map.

  1. Day 1: Arrival & West Maui Orientation

    1. Morning

Land at Kahului Airport, pick up rental car (you will need a car — this is non-negotiable on Maui). Drive to Ka'anapali or Napili, check in. Drop bags.

    2. Afternoon

Kaanapali Beach — one of the best family beaches in Hawaii. Flat water on the south end near Whaler's Village, bigger swells north toward Black Rock. Tweens can snorkel off Black Rock Point; reef fish visibility is excellent even with just mask and fins from the beach.

    3. Evening

Dinner at Monkeypod Kitchen in Wailea or Ka'anapali — wood-fired pizza, local fish, housemade ice cream. The bar scene around them is energetic but the restaurant is family-friendly early. Tweens will like the menu variety.

    Named today, on the map

Tip: Buy a Maui snorkel set at Snorkel Bob's in Kahului ($35 rental/week) rather than paying $15/day at beach shacks. Far cheaper for a 5-day trip.

Est. cost: $100-180Find Day 1 tickets
  2. Day 2: Molokini Snorkel Cruise

    1. Morning

Board Pride of Maui from Maalaea Harbor at 7:30am. The Molokini Crater trip is the highlight of any Maui visit — the submerged volcanic crater creates a protected marine sanctuary with 100+ ft visibility. Tweens who've snorkeled before will see their first reef sharks (whitetips, harmless, magnificent). Snorkel gear included.Book Molokini Half-Day Snorkeling Tour With Lunch and Waterslide on Viator

    2. Afternoon

On the way back, Pride of Maui often stops at 'Turtle Town' (Maluaka Beach area) for a second snorkel with near-guaranteed green sea turtle sightings. Back at harbor by 1pm. Before leaving Ma'alaea, walk over to Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice at the Maui Ocean Center entrance (daily 10am-4pm; you get a wristband at the gate, no aquarium ticket needed). Order a snow cap and let tweens build their own combination. Lunch at Maui Brewing Co. taproom near Kahului.

    3. Evening

Sunset on Ka'anapali Beach. At the north end, Pu'u Keka'a (Black Rock) hosts the Sheraton's cliff-dive ritual at sunset every evening, a tradition since 1963, retelling Chief Kahekili's leap. Then walk the Ka'anapali Beach Walk back as the sky fades.

    Named today, on the map

Tip: Bring dramamine if anyone gets seasick. Maalaea Bay can be choppy and the crater itself is calm, but the crossing matters. Non-drowsy formula the morning of.

Book opens Viator; ages and cancellation terms are listed per tour.

    Est. cost: $180-280
  3. Day 3: Road to Hana

    1. Morning

Leave by 7am. Download the Shaka Guide Road to Hana app ($5) — audio commentary that names every stop. First major stop: Twin Falls, mile marker 2, an easy 10-minute hike to a swimming hole with a rope swing. Tweens will love it. Wear swimsuits under clothes.

    2. Afternoon

Continue to Wailua Falls overlook (roadside, spectacular). Lunch from the Nahiku Marketplace food stands — fresh fish tacos, corn, banana bread. Garden of Eden Arboretum ($20) has a Jurassic Park viewpoint (scenes were filmed here) that tweens recognize immediately.

    3. Evening

Hana town: walk the black sand beach at Wainapanapa State Park (book the $10 parking reservation in advance at gostateparks.hawaii.gov). Drive back west — 2.5 hours. Late dinner or hotel room delivery.

    Named today, on the map

Tip: Wainapanapa parking requires advance online reservation — do this weeks before the trip. Without it, you can't access the beach. Non-negotiable on Maui's most-visited spots.

Est. cost: $80-140Find Day 3 tickets
  4. Day 4: Haleakalā Volcano Bike

    1. Morning

Wake at 3am. This is the price of admission. Drive 1.5 hours to the summit (10,023 ft). Haleakalā National Park opens to reserved visitors only at sunrise — book weeks in advance at recreation.gov. Watch sunrise from the summit. Then: rent bikes at Maui Downhill or Haleakalā Bike Co. at the summit or mid-station and coast 23 miles down the volcano. Tweens 12+ can typically ride independently; younger tweens ride with a guide group.

    2. Afternoon

Arrive at base by noon, exhausted and exhilarated. Back to hotel, showers, pool time. Order food in.

    3. Evening

Low-key — board games, TV, early bed. Big day earned.

    Named today, on the map

Tip: The summit is 30–40°F at sunrise even in summer. Pack full winter layers: gloves, beanie, puffy jacket. This surprises every family. You can borrow from the bike company but it's cramped and ill-fitting.

  5. Day 5: Maui Ocean Center + Departure

    1. Morning

Maui Ocean Center in Maalaea — best aquarium in Hawaii, 60+ interactive tanks, a walk-through shark tunnel. Tweens who've been snorkeling all week suddenly understand what they swam with. 2 hours.

    2. Afternoon

Airport. Kahului airport is small; arrive 90 minutes before departure for inter-island, 2.5 hours for mainland.

    3. Evening

      Flight home. Tweens will sleep.

    Named today, on the map

Tip: Ululani's has a stand at the Maui Ocean Center entrance, so this morning is your last shave ice chance — its Kahului shop on Dairy Road is also close to the airport. It's the right way to end.

Safety Notes

Hawaii ocean safety is more serious than Caribbean: there are no lifeguards at most Maui beaches, and shore breaks can knock adults off their feet. Never turn your back on ocean waves on north and west-facing shores in winter. Only swim at beaches with calm conditions confirmed that day (check Surf News Network or NOAA). At Road to Hana swimming holes, do not jump from rocks unless locals are actively doing so — depth varies by season. Haleakalā altitude causes mild altitude symptoms in some people — headache, dizziness. Descend immediately if a tween shows these signs.
